An Important Advice from an Arab Doctor and Religious Scholar to a Student

An Important Advice from an Arab Doctor and Religious Scholar to a Student

A question was asked: Any short advice for a beginner student? I have given advice many times, but I know that the first addressee of every advice is my own heart. However, perhaps there is wisdom in repetition and it may bring benefit: Know, O my dear son, that the era has passed when a comprehensive scholar of traditional and rational knowledge (Ilm-e-Riwayat-o-Dirayat) existed, towards whom the thirsty seekers of knowledge would travel and sit with utmost respect to learn. That era is now buried in the pages of history. Today's era is a time of difficulties and tribulations, where the incompetent have become leaders, the ignorant have become orators, the storytellers have become preachers, and deceitful people are prominent. Affairs have been entrusted to those who were not worthy of them, except for those whom Allah has protected with His mercy. In such circumstances, O student, make your home your sanctuary and your library your permanent prison. Confine yourself in it until death comes to you or draws near. But remember, if you choose the right books for your study, this very prison will become the Cave of Hira for you, from where the light of prophethood shone and illuminated the earth with justice and truth. Hold fast to books, for they are your ship of salvation. Through them, you will travel across the oceans of knowledge and wisdom and reach those corners of the world where the shadows of ignorance prevail. Never consider yourself inferior or think of your existence as ordinary. Know that the difference between you and a great personality is only the power of determination and the definition of purpose. Remember, there have been eras in history that became associated with the name of a single human being, like Voltaire. Therefore, make yourself that person who can become the title of history. Consider yourself the Mahdi who has to guide the world, and do not waste time waiting for someone else. And also remember, if you are truly loyal to your teachers, it is binding upon you to reach intellectual horizons beyond theirs, go to those destinations where their steps did not reach, and explore those worlds which they did not even imagine. And beware, stay away from those who cause despair and those who propagate false words.
