A Lesson in Perspective: The Teacher and the Three Apples

A Lesson in Perspective: The Teacher and the Three Apples

The student was listening attentively. The teacher asked, "If I give you an apple, and an apple, and another apple, how many apples will you have?" The student replied without any hesitation, "4." The teacher thought that perhaps the student did not understand the question correctly. The teacher calmly asked again... "Look, if I give you an apple, and an apple, and another apple, how many apples will you have in total?" The student began to think, and after a short while, he said, "4." Now the teacher was somewhat surprised and also felt angry, but he asked the question again. This time, seeing the disappointment spread across the teacher's face, the student thought deeply and replied, "4 apples." Suddenly, the teacher remembered that the student likes lychees. Maybe he doesn't like apples, and that's why he isn't able to focus on the question. Therefore, the teacher asked, "Alright, tell me, if I give you a lychee, and a lychee, and another lychee, how many will you have in total?" The student thought and replied inquisitively, "3??" "Absolutely correct!" the teacher said happily and then asked, "Now tell me, if I give you an apple, and an apple, and another apple, how many apples will you have in total?" "4," the student replied. Now the teacher grew very angry. First, he scolded the student and then asked in anger, "How? How can there be 4 apples?!" The student replied innocently: "Because there is already one apple in my bag." Therefore... instead of getting angry, it is better for a person to first understand others' perspectives. It is possible they are looking at the matter from a different angle, and it is also possible that their viewpoint is correct. (Narrated)
