The Story of a Single Night

The Story of a Single Night

A man once asked Hatim Tai, "O Hatim! Has anyone ever surpassed you in generosity?" Hatim replied, "Yes! An orphan boy from the Tayy tribe proved to be more generous than me. The story goes that during a journey, I went to his house to spend the night. He owned only ten goats. He slaughtered one, prepared its meat, and served it to me for dinner. Among the dishes he offered, there was also brain curry. When I ate it, I truly relished it and remarked, 'Wow, Subhan Allah! What an incredible taste!'" Hatim continued, "Hearing this, the orphan boy quietly slipped out and, completely without my knowledge, slaughtered all his remaining goats one by one, just to prepare and serve their brains to me. The next morning, as I was preparing to depart, I was shocked to see blood splattered everywhere around the house. I asked him, 'Why did you slaughter all your goats?' He replied, 'Wow, Subhan Allah! If my guest likes something of mine and I show stinginess in serving it, that would be considered the worst insult among Arabs!'" Hatim was then asked, "What did you give him in return?" He replied, "Three hundred red camels and five hundred goats!" The people remarked, "Then surely you proved to be more generous than him!" Hatim Tai shook his head and answered, "No...! He is far more generous than me because he sacrificed everything he possessed for the sake of generosity, whereas I merely spent a small portion out of my vast wealth."
