Hazrat Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: I asked my father, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conduct himself with his companions?" He replied, "The Prophet ﷺ was cheerful, good-mannered, and gentle-natured. He was free from bad manners, harshness, shouting, foul language, fault-finding, and misery/stinginess. If there was a matter or action he did not like, he would ignore it; if someone else liked it, he would not disappoint them by forbidding it. If someone invited him to an undesirable matter, he would not accept it; instead, he would refuse with grace. He kept himself protected from three things: (1) fighting and quarreling, (2) arrogance, and (3) useless and futile talk. And he protected people from three things: (1) he would not speak ill of anyone, (2) he would not find fault with anyone, and (3) he would not search for anyone's hidden faults. He would speak only that in which reward could be expected. When the Prophet ﷺ spoke, the companions would bow their heads and listen with absolute attention, as if birds were perched on their heads (which would fly away with the slightest movement). When the Prophet ﷺ remained silent, only then would the companions speak. The companions would not argue or quarrel in front of the Prophet ﷺ, and if someone was speaking to him, everyone would wait silently for him to finish; he would listen to each person's talk with deep attention. When the companions laughed at something, the Prophet ﷺ would also smile; if they expressed astonishment at something, he would also show wonder. If a stranger or traveler spoke in a harsh tone and asked for something, the Prophet ﷺ would exercise forbearance (and answer his queries with patience), to the extent that the companions would bring such Bedouins so that they could gain academic benefit from his questions. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'When you see a needy petitioner asking for something, fulfill his need.' He did not like to hear undue praise for his good conduct towards someone, though there was room to the extent of expressing words of gratitude. He would never interrupt anyone's speech; however, if someone exceeded the limits, he would forbid them or leave from there."
