After Al-Mu'tasim Billah, his son Al-Wathiq Billah inherited the throne in 227 AH. He possessed misleading ideas and thoughts, and in the promotion and propagation of Mu'tazilite beliefs—especially the doctrine of the "Creation of the Quran"—he surpassed even his father. A strange incident occurred during his reign: one day, the court's special jester came before the Caliph and said: "May Allah Almighty grant the Commander of the Faithful beautiful patience (Sabr-e-Jameel) regarding the Quran! I have come to offer my condolences." Al-Wathiq said: "Woe to you! You unworthy person, what are you saying? Has the Quran passed away?" The jester replied: "Commander of the Faithful! After all, what other choice is there? Death is bound to come to every creation, and according to your belief, the Quran is also a creation. If not today, then tomorrow (God forbid), this tragedy is bound to happen." Upon hearing this response from the jester, Al-Wathiq fell into deep thought. Then the jester asked a second question and said with great seriousness: "Commander of the Faithful! What will people recite in the Taraweeh prayers in the future?" This satirical question forced Al-Wathiq Billah to think deeply about the issue of the creation of the Quran.
