What is the ruling on applying scent (perfume)?

The spirit used in scent is generally not made from grapes or dates; therefore, the external use of scent is permissible. However, if it becomes known with certainty about any scent that spirit made from grapes has been used in it, then its use will be prohibited. (Kitab al-Nawazil / Vol: 15 / Page: 496)
