Even if the doctor is an expert and the medicine is beneficial, if precaution and abstinence are not practiced, then generally neither the medicine works nor the doctor's treatment proves useful. Everyone admits that here there is no issue with the doctor's expertise or the medicine's effectiveness, rather the trouble is just that the patient does not practice precaution and abstinence. Similarly, when the scholars (Ulama) say to abstain from listening to and reading the misguided and the people of falsehood, there too, neither is there any deficiency in the expertise of the scholars nor is there any defect in their religion and faith; rather, the whole issue is of not practicing abstinence, because an ordinary person, due to a lack of knowledge, can be influenced and misguided by the glibness and deception of the misguided. And yes, just as prescribing abstinence is considered a sign of goodwill from a doctor, in the same way, advising abstinence from listening to and reading the misguided should also be understood as goodwill from the scholars. Therefore, along with learning religion from and staying attached to the people of truth, it is essential to completely avoid listening to and reading the misguided groups!

An Incident from the Court of Hazrat Umar (R.A) / Rights of Children

An Incident from the Court of Hazrat Umar (R.A) / Rights of Children

In the court of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), a father filed a case against his son, claiming, "He does not fulfill my rights!" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) questioned the boy, who replied, "O Ameer al-Mu'minin (Leader of the Faithful)! Is it only the father who has all the rights over the children, or do the children also have some rights over the father?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Children also have rights binding upon the father." The boy said, "I wish to hear those rights." He said, "The right of a child upon the father is that he should choose a noble woman to have children with! And when the child is born, he should give them a good name so that it brings blessings! And when they attain maturity of understanding, he should teach them manners and provide them with religious education!" The boy said, "My father did not fulfill even a single right among these. When I was born, he named me 'Ju'al', which means 'the dung beetle'! And he did not teach me even a single letter of religion; he kept me completely blank from religious education." Hearing this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became very angry with the father, reprimanded him severely, and dismissed the case, saying, "Go and first compensate for your own wrongdoing, and after that, complain about the wrongdoing of your son!" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) dismissed the case and told the father, "You have violated rights even more than he did. Go and do not treat your children in such a manner."
