Question:

I seek your guidance regarding the issue mentioned below. I hope you will clarify it with detailed arguments. On one hand, it is said about the Holy Quran that it exists in the exact same form in which it was revealed to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). To the extent that not even a single dot, Zair (kasrah), or Zabar (fathah) has changed. But on the other hand, it is recorded in some authentic books that the recitation (Qira'at) of a specific verse is narrated in different ways, in which the difference of diacritical marks (I'rab) is common. In fact, in some places, even the difference in certain phrases has been mentioned.

If the first statement is correct, then the difference of Qira'at seems like an absurd thing, but in that case, the scholars' endorsement of the difference of Qira'at is incomprehensible. And if the second statement is accepted as correct, then the authenticity of the Quran seems to be compromised. You already know how much difference the variation in diacritical marks can make to the Arabic meanings. Here, I also deem it appropriate to state that I do not have even an iota of inclination towards the rejectors of Hadith (Munkireen-e-Hadith); rather, I am turning to you solely to understand the issue.

Answer:

This point is absolutely correct in its place that the Holy Quran exists today in the exact same form in which it was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and there has not been the slightest change in it. However, along with this, it is also absolutely correct that the difference of recitations (Qira'at) was and is present in the Quran. Those people who have not studied this issue systematically in a scholarly manner, look at it merely from a superficial perspective and casually judge that these two statements are mutually contradictory and that necessarily only one of them can be correct. That is to say, if the Quran has been correctly transmitted from the Prophet (peace be upon him), then the talk of differences in Qira'at is wrong, and if the difference of Qira'at is correct, then (God forbid) the Quran has not reached us in a correct manner...

An Instructive Dialogue Between Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) and a Villager

An Instructive Dialogue Between Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) and a Villager

A villager went to Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (R.A.), greeted him, and asked for his need to be fulfilled. He said, "I have heard from your grandfather (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), he said that when you ask anyone for a need, ask one of four (types of men): Number 1: Either he should be a noble Arab Number 2: Or a generous helper Number 3: Or a bearer of the Quran Number 4: Or one with a beautiful face In any case, as for being an Arab, you have received that honor from your grandfather; and generosity, it has commenced from you and your character; and the Quran, it was revealed in your homes; and a beautiful face, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'When you intend to look at me, look at Hasan and Hussain.' (Meaning, according to the Prophet's words, all these four qualities are found in you.)" Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) asked, "What is your need?" So he wrote his need on the ground. Then Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) said, "I have heard my father Hazrat Ali (R.A.) say: 'The value of every man is as much as the good he does,' and I heard my grandfather say: 'Goodness is according to one's spiritual recognition (Ma'rifat).' Therefore, I will ask you three questions. If you answer one well, one-third (Thuluth) of what I have will be yours; if you answer two, two-thirds of what I have will be yours; and if you answer all three, everything available with me will be yours. And the situation is that a sealed bag (gift) has been sent to me from Iraq." The villager said, "Please ask, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah (Wala hawla wala quwwata illa billah)." Number 1: Hazrat Hussain asked, "What is the best among deeds?" The bedouin said, "To believe in Allah (Iman)." Number 2: Hazrat Hussain asked, "What is salvation for a servant from destruction?" The bedouin said, "To trust in Allah (Tawakkul)." Number 3: Hazrat Hussain asked, "Which thing adorns a man?" The villager said, "Knowledge (Ilm) accompanied by forbearance (Burdbari)." Number 4: Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this, then?" The bedouin said, "Then wealth accompanied by generosity." Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this too, then?" The villager said, "Then poverty (Faqr) accompanied by patience (Sabr)." Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this too, then?" The bedouin said, "Then it is only lightning sent down from the sky that will burn him to ashes. (Meaning, then there is no way left for his survival.)" Hazrat Hussain began to laugh at his correct answers and threw that bag towards him.
