Newborn babies cry to communicate their needs. Whether it's hunger, pain, or a desire for attention, they communicate their message only by crying. But have you ever noticed that when they cry, tears don't come out of their eyes? Dr. Muhammad Tariq explained the reason for this. According to Dr. Tariq, the reason for the lack of tears is that the lacrimal glands in the eyes of newborn babies are not fully functional immediately after birth. These glands are located in the upper part of the eyes and produce tears, which flow through the tear duct. In newborn babies, these glands are not fully developed for the first two weeks, so tears are not formed at all. When are tears formed? After two weeks, the lacrimal glands start producing tears, but these tears are not in sufficient quantity to flow during crying. These glands become fully functional between one and three months, and tears usually begin to flow from a baby's eyes by the time they are one month old. In some babies, this may start as early as two weeks if their glands develop quickly. Important Precautions Constant tears: If tears keep coming out of the baby's eyes without crying, then there is a possibility that the tear duct is blocked. Redness or swelling: If the eyes are red or swollen, then this can be a sign of infection. In such a case, consult a doctor immediately. No tears: If tears do not come out for several months, then consult a doctor. Dehydration: If tears used to come out before but now they have stopped, then this can be a sign of dehydration. If there are problems like vomiting, diarrhea, or not drinking milk, then give the baby more fluids and breastfeed. Conclusion The reason why newborns do not shed tears is that their lacrimal glands are not fully developed. Over time, these glands become active. However, if you see unusual symptoms in the eyes, contact a doctor immediately to protect the health of the baby.
