The Supreme Court has issued a notice on an AI-generated video shared on social media by the Assam BJP unit, which defamed Muslims and claimed that ‘Muslims will occupy Assam’ if the BJP loses. The video was posted on the official X handle of BJP Assam on September 15, 2025, which created a lot of outrage in public and legal circles. The court has fixed October 27, 2025 for hearing. Video and controversy The video showed fabricated scenes generated by AI, where Muslims were presented as ‘enemies’ if the BJP loses, in which people with skull caps and beards were shown ‘occupying’ them. Petitioner Qurban Ali’s lawyer Nizam Pasha told the court that the video violated Sections 123(3A) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibit appeal and spreading enmity on religious grounds. Pasha said: “If an elected government promotes a video that spreads hatred on the basis of religion or caste, it is against the spirit of the Constitution.” The Supreme Court bench, which included Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, had heard the pleas of BJP Assam, the Election Commission, and The court issued a notice to the central government. The court said: “This video is spreading communal hatred and should be removed immediately. An FIR should be registered.” The petition further said that the wide circulation of the video had increased tension in Assam, and the Election Commission was silent on it. Political reaction Congress leader Ponmoy Maithri called the video a “hate film”, while the Assam Congress accused the BJP of “communal politics”. BJP Assam president Harsh Dev denied the video, saying that “it is fake and not part of the BJP.” However, the virality of the video on X increased public anger, where users called it a “new example of Islamophobia”.
