The Indian state of Manipur has once again been engulfed in violent incidents, leading to tense conditions. The death toll from firing by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during recent clashes has risen to three, while several others have been injured.
On Wednesday, an injured youth, 31-year-old Wanghengbam Bobby, succumbed to his injuries. He was a resident of Kumbi Terakhong Makha Leikai in Bishnupur district. Prior to this, two people had died on Tuesday, bringing the total toll to three.
According to doctors, Bobby was shot in the upper part of his body, and his condition was critical. He was undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, but he could not survive. The body has been shifted to the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
This fresh violence erupted on Tuesday when alleged Kuki militants launched an attack. According to reports, a shell fired from a rocket landed on a house in Moirang Trounglaobi Makha Leikai, resulting in the painful death of two innocent children. The deceased included a five-year-old child and his six-month-old sister.
As the news of the children's deaths spread, intense grief and anger enveloped the area. Enraged individuals termed the incident brutal and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Following the incident, an angry mob attacked the CRPF camp located in the Jailmol area of Churachandpur district. The mob vandalized the camp and set several vehicles on fire. As the situation went out of control, security forces had to open fire, resulting in injuries to five people, three of whom succumbed to their injuries.
On the other hand, security agencies have taken action regarding this incident and detained three individuals. However, it has not yet been clarified whether the detained persons have a direct connection to the attack. Investigating agencies are engaged in a full probe of the incident.
In view of the tense situation, the state government has announced a partial relaxation of internet services. Broadband services, such as ILL and FTTH connections, have been restored under specific conditions so that courts, health, education, and other essential services are not affected. However, authorities have warned that services may be suspended again in case of a violation of regulations.
Currently, according to authorities, the situation is tense but under control, while security forces remain alert throughout the area.
