Jantar Mantar's Landscape Changes After 33 Years: Barricades Removed, Road Opened for Public; Protests No Longer Allowed Here

The Delhi Police has removed multi-layered barricades from Delhi's historic protest site, Jantar Mantar, reopening the road for regular vehicular traffic. Serving as a prominent protest hub since 1993, the area's landscape has transformed after 33 years. Common citizens and commuters can now move through the stretch without any hindrance.

How Was the Situation Earlier?

From a security standpoint, heavy multi-tier barricading was maintained on both sides of Jantar Mantar Road.

Heavy deployments of police personnel, paramilitary forces, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and anti-riot vehicles were stationed continuously.

These restrictions severely disrupted local traffic movement over an extended period.

Why Was Jantar Mantar Removed from the Designated Protest Sites List?

In October, clashes broke out between Delhi Police and demonstrators during a protest staged by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other outfits against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Following recommendations by a Ministry of Home Affairs-appointed committee, the Delhi Police issued an official order on October 11 denotifying Jantar Mantar as an authorized protest venue.

Who Will Benefit?

The closure of Jantar Mantar Road caused severe traffic congestion on Parliament Street, Connaught Place (Inner and Outer Circles), Ashok Road, and Tolstoy Marg.

During peak rush hours, short distances took nearly 20 to 30 minutes to cover.

With this direct connecting route reopened, commuting to Connaught Place and surrounding office hubs will become smoother and faster.

According to traffic officials, necessary guidelines have been issued to ensure seamless vehicular movement.

What Lies Ahead?

Following its removal from the designated list, public demonstrations and protests will no longer be permitted at Jantar Mantar. Official clarity regarding designated alternative protest locations remains awaited.

Note: The removal of barricades aims to facilitate traffic flow and public security, though the denotification order continues to spark debate surrounding the right to protest.
