Smoking increases risk of slipped disc: Doctors warn

Smoking is a health poison, and everyone is aware of its harmful effects. Yet, people ignore the advice to quit this addiction. Everyone is aware of the risks of lung diseases and cancer, but now a new study has revealed that smoking increases the risk of slipped disc (disc displacement of the spinal disc) many times. Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong have warned the public that this habit can weaken their spine, which can lead to severe pain and disability. What is a slipped disc? A slipped disc occurs when the disc between the vertebrae of the spine slips out of place and puts pressure on the nerves, causing severe pain in the back, neck or legs. It causes constant pain, numbness in the hands or feet, tingling, and difficulty walking or sitting. This problem is usually seen more with increasing age, but smoking can also cause it at a younger age. Why smoking increases the risk of slipped disc Increases? Dr. Bhaskar Borgohain of Negrims and his team highlighted this after successfully operating on a patient who had a recurring problem with slipped discs. Dr. Borgohain explained that toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke, such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and toxic hydrocarbons, damage the collagen fibers in the outer part of the disc (annulus). These fibers provide strength to the disc, but smoking affects blood circulation, which reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the disc. As a result, the disc becomes weaker and the risk of rupture or herniation (herniation) increases, especially in the lower back. Example of a successful surgery During the operation on a patient at Negrims, doctors used an innovative technique called tubular microdiscectomy, which reduced pressure on the S1 nerve root of the spine. In this process, four large pieces of the disc were removed. This success has encouraged doctors to emphasize that smoking cessation is the best strategy for protecting against the disease. Doctors' warning and advice Doctors in Negrims The public has been urged to completely quit smoking. It not only improves spinal health but also benefits the musculoskeletal system as a whole. Dr. Borgohain said: “Smoking not only damages the lungs and heart, but it also weakens the spine, which can lead to lifelong pain and discomfort.” Public reaction There have been many comments on social media regarding the study. In an X post, one user wrote: “I had heard about the harms of smoking, but was surprised to learn that it can also affect the spine. People should take this seriously.” Another user commented: “Spine pain is a big problem anyway. If smoking makes it worse, then it’s time to give up the habit.” Conclusion The risk of slipped discs from smoking is a serious warning that this habit not only damages the lungs or heart, but also weakens an important organ like the spine. Negrims' research and doctors' warnings are a reminder that complete abstinence from smoking is essential for a healthy life. It is inevitable. This is an important message not only for the current generation but also for future generations to prioritize their health and protect themselves from toxic fumes.
