The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus once again became engulfed in a violent clash, where a confrontation broke out between 28 students, including Student Union President Nitesh Kumar, and the police, leaving 6 police personnel injured. Students broke barricades and protested on Nelson Mandela Road, which caused a traffic jam. The police immediately arrested 19 men and 9 women, while the university administration imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees on Nitesh, alleging that he broke barricades near the Dean of Students office and damaged property.

Details of the Incident:

On the evening of October 6, 2025, 70-80 students gathered at the West Gate of JNU, trying to protest on Nelson Mandela Road. The police set up barricades, and after initial negotiations, the students became enraged, leading to a scuffle. According to the police, the students broke the barricades and jammed the traffic. The DCP stated that "6 personnel (4 men, 2 women) were injured, who were given medical aid."

The Student Union termed the protest against the "hostel eviction notice," while the administration accused Nitesh of "violation of law." The arrested students were taken into custody, and legal action was initiated.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said: "Students' protest is a symbol of democracy, the police action is unacceptable." The BJP condemned the "students' unrest." JNU, which has been a hub of student protests, has been under controversy since the 2020 CAA protests.
