WhatsApp has introduced a revolutionary feature to rid users of spam, promotional, and unwanted messages, which restricts continuous messages coming from unknown numbers. Developed in collaboration with NPCI and RBI, this monthly message cap feature will allow business accounts a limited number of messages unless the user replies. Starting from October 8, 2025, this feature will be implemented in several countries in the coming weeks, making digital payments and chat secure and convenient.
Details of the Feature:
WhatsApp's new monthly message cap feature will limit the number of messages coming from unknown or business numbers. For example, if a business has a limit of 10 messages, it can only send 10 messages per month if no reply is received. The need for PIN, OTP, or card has ended, as verification will now be possible through fingerprint or facial scan. This feature will simplify UPI payments, where the PIN can be reset using biometrics.
According to WhatsApp, this feature will make the platform free of spam, which caused a loss of 1.5 lakh crore rupees in 2024. General users will not be affected; instead, it will control advertising companies.
Impact and Benefits:
- Convenience: Biometric instead of PIN/OTP, which will be convenient for rural areas and the elderly.
- Secure: Reduced risk of fraud, which was facing a 20% increase in 2025.
- Inclusion: 30 crore users without cards will be able to use UPI, bringing a 2% increase in GDP.
Experts say this is an important step for 'Digital India', but strict privacy laws are necessary.
