Lawyers Rampage at Allahabad High Court: Alleged Vandalism in Justice Ajay Bhanot's Courtroom, Bar Association Alleges Insult
Lawyers at the Allahabad High Court allegedly vandalized Justice Ajay Bhanot's courtroom on Wednesday. Protesting lawyers raised slogans as Justice Bhanot entered the courtroom, and a group subsequently damaged tables and chairs placed there. The incident occurred a day after newly elected office-bearers of the High Court Bar Association wrote a letter to the Chief Justice on Tuesday demanding action against Justice Bhanot.
What Are the Bar Association's Allegations?
In a letter sent through the Registrar General, the Bar Association alleged that during court proceedings on October 27, Justice Bhanot insulted an advocate and ridiculed senior advocate V. P. Srivastava.
Details of the Matter According to the Letter:
A police officer of the Superintendent of Police (SP) rank was sitting in the row behind the Additional Government Advocate (AGA).
A lawyer asked him to move to a back row, stating that the seat did not belong to him.
It is alleged that the AGA reprimanded the lawyer and threatened to complain to the judge.
According to the Bar, upon entering the courtroom, Justice Bhanot pointed a finger at the lawyer and ordered in strong terms that he be sent to jail.
When the lawyer apologized, the judge directed him to apologize to the police officer.
Complaint to the Chief Justice
The Association stated that this series of events harmed the dignity of the legal community. Describing the alleged conduct as contemptuous in the letter, it requested the Chief Justice to take serious note of the matter and initiate appropriate action. Following this, lawyers held a protest in Justice Bhanot's courtroom on Wednesday, during which the alleged vandalism occurred.
Note: All these points are based on the allegations made by the Bar Association and the reported sequence of events.
